Initial Cleaning

PD-0090 Initial CleaningProper cleaning of the vehicle is the first step for any repair. This standard operating procedure (SOP) covers preparing the surface and removing dust and contaminants from the vehicle to ensure a defect-free finish.

Follow along with the outlined process below for the first steps in achieving a flawless finish.

PD-0090: INITIAL CLEANING STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE

  1. Wash Vehicle Surface
To begin, wash the entire vehicle with warm, soapy water. If available, use a pressure washer for best results.
  2. Rinse Vehicle
Make sure to rinse thoroughly, especially the gaps between the body panels, any seams and the wheel openings.
  3. Dry Vehicle
After the vehicle has dried completely, use compressed air to remove any loose particles from the vehicle. Again, concentrate on the body panel gaps, seams and wheel arches.
  4. Use VOC Compliant Cleaning System
Prior to performing repairs, use a regionally VOC-compliant cleaner recommended for your paint system and employ the “apply on, wipe off” technique.
  5. Apply Cleaner
Apply a generous amount of the appropriate cleaner to the surface of the vehicle.
  6. Wipe Away Contaminants
Wipe in one direction to float the contaminants to the surface. Only work in small sections at a time to prevent contaminants from drying on the surface.
  7. Use Dry Cloth to Remove Cleaner
Then, while the surface is still wet, use a dry cloth to wipe the cleaner off, being careful to wipe in one direction to avoid smearing.
  8. Avoid Residue and Wipe Marks
It’s critical that the cleaner is not allowed to dry on the surface. This can leave residue and wipe marks which may lead to paint failure.
