Acclaimed custom car builder and painter Darryl Hollenbeck won the 2016 America’s Most Beautiful Roadster (AMBR) award at the Grand National Roadster Show (GNRS) held at the Pomona Fairplex in Pomona, Calif., Jan. 29–31. It was the third time Hollenbeck has painted an AMBR winner, and the first time he captured the prize with his own car—a PPG-painted 1932 Ford highboy roadster.

The GNRS started in 1950 and is the longest running indoor car show in the world, and the AMBR, a towering eight foot tall trophy, is considered the ultimate recognition for a roadster-style hot rod. This year a field of thirteen outstanding cars—built by the elites of the custom car world—competed for the prestigious award. In the end, the judges named Darryl and Terri Hollenbeck’s classically styled roadster the winner, giving Darryl another honor to add to his long list of accomplishments including AMBR wins in 2013 and 2005.

Hollenbeck and his colleagues Dan Webb and Cory Taulbert built the car at Vintage Color Studio, the custom shop Hollenbeck owns and operates in Concord, Calif., and where he has been using PPG products exclusively for more than 25 years. Hollenbeck then painted the car himself. He came up with the roadster’s unique color, dubbed “Rotten Avocado Green,” applying a custom mix created with the PPG ENVIROBASE® High Performance waterborne paint system along with Single-Stage DCC9300 from the DELTRON® refinish system.

“Winning an AMBR is a dream; to win it with my own car, wow, I’m over the moon about that,” said Hollenbeck. “As for the color, it is different. My wife wanted brown, I wanted green. Depending on the light, you see one color or the other—or both. The great thing was that the PPG paint was easy to work with. It gave us the chance to experiment, to really stretch our imaginations and come up with something cool.”

Hollenbeck is prominent among Northern California’s custom car set. His well-respected eye for color has led to his paint jobs being highlighted on vehicles that have graced the covers and photo spreads of notable publications including Street Rodder and Rodder’s Journal. Several Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance show winners have also displayed Hollenbeck’s painting skills.

The Work Truck Show is considered the work truck industry’s most important annual event and the ultimate networking and knowledge resource for industry professionals. Attendees have an opportunity to meet with their peers and learn about new products, services and technological developments. They can also gain an understanding of critical business trends and key issues facing the industry.

“This is the industry’s ‘must-attend’ event,” said J.J. Wirth, brand manager for PPG Commercial Coatings. “And for us the Work Truck Show is a great opportunity to display our products and explain to visitors how we address and overcome the multitude of challenges the work truck industry faces every day. Visitors to the PPG booth will have a chance to see how the Commercial Coatings brands—including the DELFLEET® Evolution and DELFLEET ESSENTIAL® paint systems—can enhance the durability, versatility and performance of their products.”

PPG Commercial Coatings has added F4921WH–2.1 White Epoxy Primer and F4921BK–2.1 Black Epoxy Primer to the popular DELFLEET® Evolution premium commercial paint system. Similar to the F4921 Gray Epoxy Primer PPG introduced in June 2015, F4921WH and F4921BK are compatible with Delfleet Evolution basecoats and single-stage topcoats. The new primers are exceptionally versatile and can be matched with an array of substrates including aluminum, cold rolled steel, stainless steel, galvanized steel, galvaneal, fiber glass and cured surfaces.

F4921WH and F4921BK offer numerous practical qualities that make them a smart choice for OEM manufacturers as well as repair shops. The new primers display superior adhesion and corrosion resistance and can be applied over bare metal as a protective layer or as a sealer over existing finishes. They are also fast-drying and can be topcoated as primer sealers in as little as 30 minutes, making them well suited for value-conscious collision centers. The primer is applied in a 3:1:1 mix ratio and lays down smoothly because of its thin film quality.

“Adding these two primers to the Delfleet Evolution brand makes our product lineup even more flexible,” said J.J. Wirth, PPG brand manager, fleet segments. “These are multipurpose high-quality primers with fast-drying characteristics that will help speed cycle times and productivity in shops of all sizes. Our original F4921 gray has proven itself quite well; by expanding our selections with these low VOC primers in black and white, we’re giving PPG customers more choices to address their requirements.”

As low VOC epoxy primers, F4921WH and F4921BK are compliant for all parts of the U.S. and Canada.

PPG Commercial Coatings will exhibit its line of advanced coating products at the 28th annual National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) national convention and trade show. The show, regarded as this industry’s premier 2016 event, is scheduled Feb. 10–12 in Las Vegas, Nev., at the South Point Hotel. More than 800 attendees are expected. PPG will present its latest coating technologies in booth 813.

The convention supplies NATM members with educational, networking and communication opportunities as well as information about the latest industry products and services. PPG will display a trailer painted with various paint system technologies, resulting in real-life application scenarios. Representatives will be on hand to answer questions.

“We view this as one of PPG’s most important industry events,” said Steve Podlas, brand manager for PPG Commercial Coatings. “Because of our close relationship with the NATM, many of our products are developed specifically to address the requirements of the trailer industry. We’ll be displaying many of our coating brands including the DELFLEET® Evolution and DELFLEET ESSENTIAL® paint systems. We invite attendees to visit our booth and learn how PPG coatings can protect their products.”

The NATM is the trade association for manufacturers of light- and medium-duty trailers as well as suppliers of products and services to those manufacturers. The organization was established to help improve trailer safety and performance and to serve as the representative for trailer manufacturers and their suppliers when issues of trailer safety and pertinent regulations arise.

PPG became an NATM member in 1999 and has worked closely with the organization and its members to address evolving manufacturing requirements with a variety of PPG coating products that provide superior durability, efficiency and versatility. PPG began its convention sponsorship in 2003. PPG and NATM have also worked together as co-sponsors of the annual Green Manufacturing Award. The prize honors the NATM member that has developed the best environmentally conscious manufacturing solution or innovation. The 2016 winner will be announced at the show.
