STRONGSVILLE, Ohio – Feb. 5, 2015 - A Bobby Alloway-built car won the 2015 America’s Most Beautiful Roadster (AMBR) award at the recent Grand National Roadster Show (GNRS) held Jan. 23-25 at the Pomona Fairplex in Pomona, Calif. The striking 1933 roadster, owned by Larry Olson of Sioux Falls, S.D., was finished by Alloway and drew approval from the show judges and the crowd alike. The AMBR, an eight-foot tall trophy, is awarded annually and is regarded as the ultimate recognition of a roadster-style hot rod. It was Alloway’s second time winning the prestigious award; his first was in 2003. Alloway also won Best Rod of the GNRS this year with the '37 Chevrolet coupe that was in the top ten in the Builder's Challenge at SEMA this past November.
The GNRS started in 1950 and is the longest running indoor car show in the world. This year, eighteen competitors vied for the AMBR. Alloway’s award-winning entry featured his signature black finish embellished with contrasting blazing orange flames running nearly the entire length of the roadster’s body. Alloway uses PPG products exclusively, and this showpiece was no exception. He achieved the car’s outstanding look with PPG’s DELTRON® DBU 9700 Basecoat and DCU 2002 CONCEPT® Clearcoat.
Alloway, renowned as “the master of black” because his distinctive cars are almost always painted black, has been building ageless street rods since 1978. His shop, Alloway’s Hot Rod Shop, in Louisville, Tenn., opened in 1991 and has consistently turned out a stream of award-winning vehicles. He is well known for cars that feature a commanding, aggressive look obtained through a combination of color, proportion, stance and pure power.
Along with winning the AMBR and Best Rod honors, Alloway was inducted into the GNRS Roadster Hall of Fame during the show. The Hall of Fame was established in1960 to elect “outstanding pioneers in the creative car building sport.” Alloway’s entry into the respected body was based on his illustrious career, building remarkable cars that have received significant awards. In addition to his two AMBRs, his cars have won the Goodguys’ Street Rod and Street Machine of the Year, the highly-prized Ridler trophy and others. He has also been welcomed into the National Rod & Custom Car Hall of Fame and honored as Detroit Autorama Builder of the Year.
Other first-class builders that were big winners at the show included Randy Borcherding of Painthouse in Cypress, Texas, and Dave Kindig of Kindig-It Design, Salt Lake City, Utah. Borcherding’s two-toned 1947 Hudson painted in his custom Bad, Bad Leroy Brown and Green Acres Pearl took First in Class, Outstanding Paint, and Outstanding Display accolades. “Winning these awards was awesome,” said Borcherding. “This is the Olympics of car shows, and you’re up against top competition. Winning here is extremely gratifying.”
Borcherding used Deltron DP90LV Epoxy Primer, VIBRANCE COLLECTION® VP2100 Polyester Primer, Deltron Basecoat and GLOBAL REFINISH SYSTEM™ D8152 Clearcoat to reap the honors. Borcherding has been using PPG products for 25 years. Painthouse has been building custom cars for almost 10 years and has a reputation for its outstanding paint jobs.
Dave Kindig scored with a 1934 Dodge and a 1950 Phantom Fleetside. The Dodge took home First in Class, Outstanding Paint, Outstanding Interior and Outstanding Display awards. The car is painted a custom PPG mix called Dark Desert Sage, which was created using ENVIROBASE® High Performance Basecoat and Global Refinish System D8188 Clearcoat. The Phantom Fleetside won the 2015 Al Slonaker Award for the most innovative vehicle at the show. It’s finished in a white-over-red paint scheme using Envirobase High Performance Basecoat and Global Refinish System D8188 Clearcoat. Both builds are fine examples of the high-level work Kindig-It Design regularly turns out.
“From solvent to water, our customers make our paint shine,” said John Parran, marketing director, PPG Automotive Refinish. “We’re proud of our products, but we’re even more impressed by what our customers can do with them. We congratulate these winners on jobs well done and look forward to what they dream up next.”

STRONGSVILLE, Ohio – Feb. 6, 2015 - PPG Commercial Coatings has introduced DELFLEET® Evolution F3259 HS Basecoat Hardener, an ideal match for use with the brand’s FBCH premium basecoat.
F3259 Basecoat Hardener has been specially designed to enhance the overall application and appearance of the Delfleet Evolution FBCH basecoat. FBCH is a fast-drying basecoat that, when clearcoated, provides the ultimate durability and look favored by fleet refinishers. By mixing F3259 in a 3:1:1 ratio with the basecoat and appropriate F344X dry additive, overall application performance and finish appearance are improved, particularly when applying transparent colors.
“We’re very proud to introduce F3259 Basecoat Hardener as a key component of the Delfleet Evolution line,” said J.J. Wirth, PPG brand manager, fleet segments. “We’re constantly working to offer products that respond to our customers’ requirements, and F3259 comes directly out of that effort. With F3259, refinish techs can expect a speedier, easier application process that we believe will produce highly favorable results. Customers who use F3259 will quickly appreciate its qualities.”
According to Wirth, F3259 improves flow and leveling as well as overspray absorption. The new hardener also delivers faster out-of-dust times, tape times and cure. In addition, its quick drying capabilities improve overall cycle times and productivity.
PPG Commercial Coatings offers a full range of coating technologies for the commercial transportation and industrial markets, including polyurethanes, alkyds, epoxies, polyurea, waterborne, pretreatment chemicals and powder coatings. PPG Commercial Coatings will once again exhibit its advanced coating products at the upcoming NationalAssociation of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) and National Truck Equipment Association (NTEA) annual trade events. The NATM national convention and show is scheduled for Feb. 12-13 in New Orleans at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. The NTEA event, “The Work Truck Show,” will take place in Indianapolis at the Indianapolis Convention Center March 4-6.
The NATM represents manufacturers of light- and medium-duty trailers as well as suppliers of products and services to those manufacturers. The organization was established to help improve trailer safety and performance and provide a voice for trailer manufacturers and their suppliers when issues of trailer safety and regulation arise. This will be the NATM’s 27th annual convention. The PPG booth, number 413, will present PPG’s latest coating technologies.
PPG became an NATM member in 1999. Since joining, PPG has worked closely with the organization and its members, helping them meet evolving manufacturing requirements with a variety of advanced PPG coating products that provide superior durability, efficiency and versatility. PPG initiated convention sponsorship in 2003.
PPG and NATM are co-sponsors of the Green Manufacturing Award. The annual prize honors the NATM member that has developed the top manufacturing solution or innovation that affects the environment in a positive way. The 2015 winner will be announced at the show.
As with the NATM, PPG has a strong relationship with the NTEA and its members. The NTEA show is considered the work truck industry’s most important annual event, an opportune time to learn about new products, technological developments and services as well as key issues facing the industry. The PPG NTEA display, booth 4374, will emphasize PPG’s ongoing product development and offerings for the trucking industry.
The NTEA represents approximately 1,600 companies that manufacture, distribute, install, sell and repair commercial trucks, truck bodies, truck equipment, trailers and accessories. Buyers of work trucks and major commercial truck chassis manufacturers are also members. The organization provides technical information and educational programs and services for members.
PPG Commercial Coatings representatives will be at both events to present a variety of products and applications.

STRONGSVILLE, Ohio - Feb 26, 2015 - PPG Commercial Coatings and the National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) have named Load Trail,a Sumner, Texas-based manufacturer of custom-built trailers, as the recipient of the 2015 Green Manufacturing Award. The award presentation took place Feb. 13 at the NATM’s 27th annual convention and trade show in New Orleans. Corney Thiessen, Load Trail CEO, accepted the award.
The Green Manufacturing Award recognizes the NATM member with the year’s best solution or innovation that positively affects the environment. Award contenders are judged on case studies that demonstrate improved, ecologically conscious performance in their operations. Companies must provide documentation of the green initiatives or improvements they have implemented. Load Trail made its case for the award in the area of pretreatment chemistry.
Established in 1996 in a 38,000-square-foot manufacturing plant, Load Trail has grown to encompass more than 420,000 square feet, with manufacturing facilities that include 14 mechanized production lines and a fully equipped fabrication shop. The company’s vision is to become the premier trailer manufacturer in North America. Recognizing the environmental responsibility such an objective requires, Load Trail evaluated options in pretreatment chemistry prior to powder coating that would achieve:
-
Overall environmentally friendly chemistry
-
Enhanced adhesion and corrosion protection
-
Reduction in chemical heat requirements
-
Reduction in water consumption
After extensive testing with its powder supplier, the company changed its pretreatment chemistry from iron phosphate to an advanced, nonregulated zirconium pretreatment specifically formulated for Load Trail and named “Load Trail Green Z.” The modification resulted in:
-
A safer work environment for pretreatment employees;
-
A chemistry health rating of one (improved from two);
-
Increased corrosion protection;
-
Reduction of chemical concentration from ~3-4% to 0.5%;
-
Reduced water requirements—zirconium pretreatment at the use concentration of 0.5% requires no post-rinse
-
Marked reduction in propane use, with chemical heat requirement reduced from 150f to 80-90f.
The Green Manufacturing Award includes a cash gift that the winner may direct to a charitable organization of its choice. Load Trail selected Roots & Wings International Ministries, a nonprofit group based in Honey Grove, Texas. Roots & Wings works with impoverished families in Mazatlán, Mexico, to provide a safe and nurturing setting for children who have no one to care for them while their parents are at work.
According to Ron Yarnell, PPG OEM sales manager, the Green Manufacturing Award was established to encourage NATM members to initiate environmentally responsible programs. “We at PPG are firm advocates of environmental protection. As the founding sponsor of the Green Manufacturing Award, we teamed with the NATM as part of our dedication to ecological accountability and to promote green improvements in the activities of our members. PPG’s financial support reflects this commitment to improving the environment.”
Yarnell added that the Green Manufacturing Award is growing in visibility and is establishing itself as the premier charitable event in the trailer industry. Trailer-related companies interested in co-sponsoring the award should contact the NATM.
The NATM represents manufacturers of light- and medium-duty trailers as well as a wide range of suppliers to the industry. The organization promotes universal recognition of safety and quality in trailer manufacturing to the trailer industry and the general public. NATM works to improve the trailer industry through the promotion of compliance with its Guidelines and other initiatives. The association has more than 800 member companies in the United States, Canada, Mexico and other countries.
