STRONGSVILLE, Ohio - April 2, 2015 -
PPG Automotive Refinish has named Pennsylvania-based BAPS Auto Paint & Supply the 2014 Platinum Distributor of the Year. The announcement was made by Bob Wenzinger, director of the PPG Platinum Distributor program, during the awards dinner at the annual PPG Platinum Distributor Conference held March 5–8 at the Lowes Royal Pacific Resort in Orlando, Fla. BAPS co-owner Dean Berkheimer accepted the award for the company.

“Being named PPG Platinum Distributor of the Year is a significant achievement and it’s a privilege to give the award to a deserving company,” said Wenzinger. “This year I’m proud to say BAPS Auto Paint & Supply has earned this very special honor. The company has repeatedly demonstrated its dedication to customer service as well as its exceptional support of and loyalty to PPG. The team at BAPS has done an outstanding job addressing the requirements of PPG customers throughout their region. I am happy to recognize BAPS Auto Paint & Supply as our Platinum Distributor of the Year.”

Berkheimer attended the conference with his sister and co-owner Sharon Hogue. In all, three generations of the Berkheimer family were represented including Ray and Robert Berkheimer, Sharon Hogue and Dean Berkheimer and Dean’s son Brett. They were accompanied by key members of the BAPS management team.

Asked about his reaction to winning the award, Berkheimer said, “I was surprised and, of course, excited and grateful. We have a great team and everyone in our organization has worked very hard to reach this level. Being worthy of recognition as Platinum Distributor of the Year is a great honor and reward for our work. Thank you.”

BAPS was established in 1961 as R.F. Berkheimer & Sons, painting contractors. Raymond F. Berkheimer was the owner. His two sons, Ray W. and Robert, worked for him. In 1977 Raymond retired leaving his sons to continue the family business. Ray and Robert moved the company into the automotive paint business and in 1979 opened BAPS Auto Paint & Supply in York, Pa. A few years later, BAPS became a single-line PPG distributor and in 1995, when the PPG Platinum Distributor program was initiated, was one of the first distributors to join. Since then, the company has grown significantly and now has six stores in three states—Pennsylvania, Maryland and Massachusetts—with 106 employees serving PPG customers throughout the area. In the process, BAPS has made a substantial investment in its operations through PPG’s wide variety of Platinum Distributor Program opportunities.

“Being part of the Platinum Distributor Program has been a critical factor in the growth of our company,” added Berkheimer. “The support we receive from PPG has been outstanding; the reps are always ready to help, always available. The program provides the wide-ranging management and employee training that’s made a real difference in our success. And, of course, we have top-quality PPG products to sell. Put that all together and our customers get great products, sound advice and first-class customer service. It’s win-win all the way around.”

The PPG Platinum Distributor program began as a loyalty and support initiative for PPG single-line distributors with the ultimate goal of providing exceptional service and benefits for PPG Refinish customers. The program delivers competitive advantages to its participants by aligning the technology, training and customer support of PPG with the entrepreneurship, customer awareness, local market knowledge and service capability of the independent distributor.

PPG Automotive Refinish has repainted its popular show truck. The truck, a 75-foot 2016 Freightliner Cascadia tractor-trailer rig now features a fresh red, white and blue paint scheme reminiscent of the stars and stripes of the American flag. The spectacular paint job shows off the vibrant colors, extreme graphics and unrivaled special effects that PPG’s commercial products inspire and encourage.

“The PPG show truck represents our company wherever it travels,” said Cristina Fronzaglia-Murray, manager of marketing communications, PPG Automotive Refinish. “We wanted it to be an absolute show-stopper, one that clearly displays what our products can do. We also wanted the paint scheme to recognize and celebrate the freedom we have in this country—from the ability to pick the cars we drive to the color and paint we choose for them. We believe this color scheme and design reflect that, and it’s a pleasure for PPG to be able to share that message as our truck travels across the country."

Steve Breakfield and the team at Motorhead Racing and Design Co., Charlotte, N.C., came up with the unique design, which was an instant hit with PPG staff. Gerber Collision & Glass in Grand Rapids, Mich., was awarded the refinish project. Led by fleet operations manager Fred Honoré II and Chris Hansen, general manager of the company’s Grand Rapids truck location, the crew stripped and sandblasted old paint off the trailer before using several premium PPG DELFLEET® Evolution products including F3995 Epoxy Primer, the FBC Basecoat System and F3921 2.1 VOC Clearcoat to achieve the bright and colorful finish.

“We were privileged to be a part of this,” said Honoré. “To be chosen by PPG to paint its show truck, that’s a real honor. This is the kind of thing you tell your grandkids—that your work was respected enough by your paint supplier that they trusted us with a job as important as this. We loved painting this truck.”

Jamie Redd, PPG facility manager and instructor, echoed the sentiment. Redd worked with the Gerber team providing instruction and technical support as the work progressed. “This truck is awesome,” he said. “The finish and design are beautiful. I’d love to ride on this rig in a Fourth of July parade anywhere in the country. That would be a photo moment.”

Veteran PPG driver Chad Hook will drive the truck, which has a brand-new cab tailored to his requirements, to major custom car and truck shows sponsored by the Goodguys Rod & Custom Association, the National Street Rod Association (NSRA) and other automotive enthusiast groups. Car and truck buffs are welcome to visit the truck at any of its stops.

STRONGSVILLE, Ohio - Apri 1, 2015  PPG Automotive Refinish held an automotive custom restoration seminar at the company’s Wixom, Mich., Business Development Center March 9–11. The three-day event, part of a series of PPG custom training classes, provided instruction in PPG processes and products for successfully prepping and painting automotive restoration projects.

Event registration drew professional custom builders, hobbyists and vocational technology students from across the country. Several notable custom car world celebrities also attended. These included Charley Hutton of Charley Hutton's Color Studio, Nampa, Idaho; Randy Borcherding of Painthouse, Cypress, Texas; Ryan Korek of Korek Designs, New Berlin, Pa., and the paint team from Detroit Speed, Inc., Mooresville, N.C.

“This was a great experience for everyone,” said Jeff Matauch, Business Development Center manager. “Everybody wanted to hear about the latest PPG painting techniques and products. Even the most accomplished painters like Hutton and Borcherding were eager to learn from us—and from each other. We know there’s demand for custom restoration, and we hope to develop more of these seminars in the near future.”

Instruction over the three days covered surface preparation and undercoats, topcoats and clearcoats. While many of PPG’s refinish products were discussed, the workshop focused on the popular VIBRANCE COLLECTION® custom paint finishes and its many colors, micas, pigments and special effects that give painters exceptional latitude in creating dramatic paint schemes. To ensure their versatility, Vibrance Collection offerings have been carefully crafted to work seamlessly with all PPG premium quality solvent and waterborne topcoat systems.

Seminar attendees received copies of PPG’s new Custom Restoration Guide. The guide presents details of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for custom builders and restorations. Randy Cremeans, PPG director of marketing, collision segment USCA, worked with industry experts such as Matauch, PPG master painter Paul Stoll, the Roadster Shop crew in Chicago and others to create a guide that would share with customers practical real-world insights into the restoration process. Regardless of what vehicle or vehicle substrate is being worked on, the Custom Restoration Guide outlines PPG's recommended process for successful surface prepping and painting. The guide documents the multiple procedures involved in custom restorations and addresses everything from stripping a substrate to color identification and the application of the paint. The Custom Restoration Guide is available online at the PPG website and may be viewed or downloaded free of charge. Anyone interested in vehicle restoration is invited to the site.

STRONGSVILLE, Ohio - April 30, 2015 - Toyota of Orlando has won the Toyota Certified Collision Center Triple Crown Award. It is the second time the dealership has received the accolade; the previous honor came in 2012. The award was presented to Toyota of Orlando’s Scott O’Connor, collision center director, by Jeff Hilton, wholesale parts and collision manager for Toyota Motor Sales, at a special celebration dinner held April 22 at Fogo de Chão in Orlando. O’Connor accepted the award on behalf of the dealership’s 42 collision center employees, all of whom attended the event along with their guests.

The Triple Crown Award is presented annually to the Toyota dealer collision center that best exemplifies the spirit of certification. According to Hilton, more than 175 Toyota Certified Collision Center (TCCC) dealers nationwide competed for the prize.

“This award is quite an achievement in the Toyota family,” said Hilton. “Centers are evaluated on a point system based on customer satisfaction; manager, estimator and technician certification; facility and equipment requirements and other benchmark achievements as well as sales volume. By winning twice in three years, it’s obvious Toyota of Orlando is doing something very right.”

Toyota of Orlando moved to its current location three years ago. The new facility helped the dealership qualify for award competition.

“It was an honor to receive this award the first time; earning it again makes us very proud that our efforts continue to be recognized,” said O’Connor. “Our success comes from the hard work and exceptional abilities of our entire team. Additionally, the support and training we receive from Toyota, Ben’s Paint Supply and PPG experts keep us at the leading edge of refinish technology. In particular, PPG’s MVP program has been instrumental in helping us reach our goals of maximizing productivity without compromising the quality our customers demand.”

The dealership has been a PPG customer since it opened. Six years ago it converted to the ENVIROBASE® High Performance waterborne system.

“We look at Toyota of Orlando as a showcase for what can be accomplished with great products and great support,” said Matt Boyd, PPG territory manager. “Scott and his staff have taken advantage of our Green Belt Training program, applied lean processes and earned the respect of Toyota’s management. We are very pleased to congratulate the dealership.”
